Chang'an Still: A Mesmerizing Illustration Series by Wu Yao

Reviving Ancient China's Xi'an Through Artistic Brilliance

Wu Yao's award-winning illustration series, Chang'an Still, brilliantly captures the essence of ancient Xi'an, China's historical city. The series is a testament to the city's vibrant past and present, showcasing its iconic landmarks and cultural heritage.

The inspiration for Chang'an Still stems from the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Wu Yao's fascination with the city's ancient landmarks, such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Daming Palace, is evident in the series. The illustrations also capture the city's lively nightlife and the timeless charm of its ancient city walls. Wu Yao's aim was to connect the city's past and present, creating a narrative that tells the story of Xi'an's glory and brightness.

What sets this series apart is Wu Yao's unique approach to storytelling. The illustrations are not just static images; they are scenes from a story that unfolds across time. Wu Yao combines elements of the ancient and modern to create a timeline that spans a millennium, allowing the viewer to experience the city's evolution and growth.

The series was created using a technique inspired by the Painting of Rivers and Mountains over a Thousand Miles by Wang Ximeng of the Northern Song Dynasty. The series comprises 24 small pictures, each representing one of China's 24 solar terms. This structure allows for a comprehensive exploration of the city's changing landscapes and cultural shifts over the course of a year.

Wu Yao's team included talented illustrators Yuchen Zang, Boxing Xie, Huafeng Shi, and Zhen Tan. The project was initiated in Beijing in September 2021 and was completed in February 2022. The team faced the challenge of capturing the city's long history and the harmony between humanity and nature. However, their combined efforts resulted in a series that is as captivating as it is informative.

The Chang'an Still Illustration Series has been recognized for its artistic excellence and innovation. In 2023, it was awarded Silver in the A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design Award. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation. The award is a testament to the team's dedication and skill, and it highlights the series' contribution to the field of illustration design.
